By default, your Mac adjusts the screen brightness for current light conditions using the built-in ambient light sensor.
Set the brightness automatically
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
- Select “Automatically adjust brightness.”
Manually set the brightness
Your Mac makes all kinds of decisions on how it should function based on settings, of course, but you may not know that the way your screen (and your backlit keyboard) brightens and dims is based on the so-called auto-brightness feature. Which, luckily, is controllable by us measly humans! Today's article is all about how you can do just that. Brightness Slider is a Mac app that rests in your system menu bar, and allows you to control the brightness of your screen. Admittedly the app isn’t going to end world hunger, but it can spare your eyes a lot of strain, especially if you find yourself too lazy to actually adjust brightness when you need to.
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
- Drag the Brightness slider to adjust the brightness of your display.
In certain low-light ambient lighting conditions, such as indoors, the default setting for automatic brightness on your display may limit the maximum brightness to a level that's below its absolute maximum. To set the brightness to the absolute maximum level in these lighting conditions, turn off “Automatically adjust brightness”, then set the brightness to the maximum level.
